VW Fan Boy just posted an article about the manual transmission. In that article, he linked to another article detailing Bosch's new "E-Clutch", a new kind of electronically actuated clutch that essentially would prevent you from stalling or even having to use the clutch at times.

In the comments to this article, a man wrote that this would be great for him because he could still have his stick and his wife could drive the car when she needed to without stalling. Unbeknownst to him, he commented using a Facebook commenting system, and it appears she saw his comment through her news feed, and she had words for him! You go, girl.

Actually I feel bad for the guy cause he was being considerate. If she didn't want to learn/worry about using a clutch then yes, this e-clutch would be great. He's not saying she can't learn and plenty of men and women don't want to learn. Lots of jalops here have given up the third pedal because of needs for the family over their own preference. Ia gree with him, the people who want to can use the clutch and the people who don't want to, don't have to.

I taught my wife how to drive a stick _on her new car_. She sympathized with my enthusiasm for it, and wanted to learn anyway. I figured the worst case scenario is that we'd have to replace the clutch early. It was two weeks before she went off on her own. 5 years later and she's mastered it, no problems starting by the traffic light on the steep hill near us, and the clutch has 80K and no signs of letting go yet. It's such a fun car to drive, and she enjoys my enthusiasm for her car when it's my turn. ('08 Passat Wagon 2.0T 6spd) I think she could really care less which transmission she is driving, but it's one more feather under her cap that she's proud of and she knows how much I enjoy it.

I'm still trying to get my wife to learn to drive stick. I have tried to teach her on multiple cars, but the problem is that she freaks herself out in traffic. She will drive around fine for over an hour, but as soon as another car gets behind her she freaks out.

One of these days I will make her get over it, and when I do, I should get some kind of award for patience.

side story, my dad bought a 96 rav4 with a stick which was weird for me since I didn't even know he could drive stick and when I asked him way he said "Because your mother can't drive stick". She showed him (and me) though by driving it and burning out that clutch at 60k, right after I bought it from him. 2nd gear starts with 126 hp and 2800 lbs. ouch.
